Based on the experiences of course providers and trainers in youth work, various quality requirements for the use of digital tools have emerged. These requirement may help you choose the right tool for your purpose or target group.

Quality indicators for digital tools are divided into four areas: technical requirements, support and tutorials, participation/inclusion and accessibility, possibilities for didactic and methodological implementation

Technical Requirements

  • It is essential to clearly outline any technical requirements, such as hardware needs or the ability to handle large data sizes.
  • Clarify in advance whether tools are compatible with all common operating systems.
  • The tool must ensure data protection and comply with regulations such as the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), safeguarding users’ personal information.
  • The tool’s functionality must be reliable, and there should be assurance that it will remain available and supported in the long term.

  • The tool should allow for integration with other digital tools or features to enhance functionality and user experience.
  • The tool should offer flexible payment plans and if prefered there should be the option of one time payment rather than a subscription. Consider using open-source tools.

Support & Tutorials

  • At the beginning of an online session, provide a brief introduction on how to use the tools.
  • Tutorials should provide short and comprehensible explanations to assist users in navigating the tool effectively.
  • Technical support should be available to assist users when they face technical problems.
  • Document the tools within the organization to ensure transparency in their use for other staff members.
  • Check whether feedback mechanisms are available for the tools.

Participation, Inclusion & Accessibilty

  • The tool should have user-friendly interfaces that enhance the user experience and make navigation intuitive for all users.
  • It must be accessible to all users, considering factors such as cost, account creation, language options, and visual representation to accommodate diverse needs.
  • Provide tool explanations for different target groups (e.g., simple language, multilingual options, sign language, etc.)
  • Ensure low-barrier access at different levels (e.g., technical equipment, free tools, etc.).

Didactic & Methodological Requirements

  • Use diverse and engaging methods to promote learning.
  • Address different learner needs by utilizing various tools.
  • The tool should be proven practices to ensure effectiveness and reliability.
  • The tool should offer features that are applicable to specific contexts, such as youth work, civic participation, or project management.
  • The tool should be designed to improve educational outcomes by enabling knowledge growth, a deepened understanding and individual reflection.
  • The tool should facilitate collaboration and communication among users, fostering a community-oriented environment.
"Criteria were, of course, the necessary flexibility. Accessibility is extremely important for us, that it can be used very quickly and intuitively. So, anything that requires a sign-up is already out of the question, except for training courses where there is a stable group. (…).”
